Catching up with James Curcio: Party at the World's End, the Fallen Cycle and Doing it Yourself

http://fallennation.tumblr.com/

In our second Catching Up post, we meet again with James Curcio of Modern Mythology (see everything here: http://www.mythosmedia.net/) and he sketches out a quick note of current projects and struggles. Our interview from two years back on Occupy, Grey Aliens and HooDoo Engine can be found here: http://thermonuclearbar.blogspot.com/p/interviews.html . James is in very interesting period of focus and regrowth, so without further ado...

It's been sometime since TNB listeners have heard directly from you, what have been the high water marks of the last 2 years of writing/research? what are you working on now? where do you see your new projects leading?what's can we look forward to from you in the next few months?

James Curcio: The past two years have been the process of starting over in everything. I developed chronic health and pain issues that are probably going to be with me for the rest of my life. The interesting thing is it's gradually changed my perspective about pretty much everything as well, and a part of that is recognizing what a mad dash I was in to get material out. I partially blame the world we're living in now, there's such an emphasis on cranking out content that the actual quality of that content is rarely even a part of the discussion.

I've been working on building my illustration chops again, as it is seeming more realistic for me to illustrate my own graphic novels than find the right illustrator. That's been an incredibly humbling process also. I think the more you work and develop an eye or ear for things, the further you realize you have to go. That never ends.

I'm wrapping up the task of reworking Party at the Worlds End so it can serve as the first book of the Fallen Cycle- it's a project I've been working on for a decade now, with quite a few false starts, but I think this first installment will be a good one. It opens up the way to tell more tales. All of it is born from the desire to take urban fantasy but give it the consideration of literature.

So that's what I'm up to, and likely to be up to for a very long time. There are many sketchbooks full of notes and concept art for the Fallen Cycle.

Review: Why I Must Be Careful "Honeycomb" EP

Rev. R4D4
Reviewed 2014-05-22  Why I Must Be Careful - Honeycomb EP

Why I Must Be Careful - two fellas hailing from the pacific northwestern wild land of hipsters AKA Beer-vana AKA Portland. Two tracks of blasting free jazz-ish/spiritual jazz mania and it sounds like these guys did their homework on their out-there-ness. Long fun tracks which you should play if you like it strange. -- Rev. R4D4

Track 1 - (17:43) Opens with a shakuhaci-ish call to prayer and drums punctuating a spiky, but
sometimes flowy rhythm followed by the Rhodes. Calls of what seems like "ENERGY" accentuate
the I'm watching a steam engine explode through a 60 foot LCD screen while on PCP feeling. Driving, funky, falls completely apart and then keeps going. At 6:39 comes in a chant about being "Raised in the House of Power" that you will definitely want to listen to on headphones. Awesome. Ends with a pretty heavy Rhoades riff.

Track 2 - (19:05) A quicker pace, if you can believe even more frantic, beat is more like a continuous drum roll, the RHodes runs a pattern piano has a few bars of a casio-like rhythm then a few bars of odd notes. Stick clicks on different parts of the drum heads and more ferocity. With some tribalish moments this song has many textures to trip out on. PLUS: Cool drum solo and a little quiet breakdown to boot as well. Tasty stuff.

EDNA #2: A Redwood City Underground Film

If you haven't had a chance to watch EDNA #2 with your favorite cold beverage in hand, NOW my friends, is the time.

HLT Productions was a small horror/comedy group from the bowels of Redwood City in the late 80s through the 90s. They created HOURS of short films on their own stock characters and EDNA was certianly one of the memorable ones. These films are a lot of fun and show what teenage minds can think of when they aren't being blasted by the non-stop-ness of 'teh internets'.

From the Internet Archive Page for EDNA:

HLT Productions Presents "EDNA 2" - the bloody, heartwarming tale of a suburbanite Grandma after REVENGE.

Proudly made with Live Video Editing prior to the internet and Adobe programs by HLT Productions, 1993.
